All Bus and Van students are to enter the school through the main entrance.  Students are not to arrive at school prior to 8:35 a.m. since supervision is not provided.  We are asking for your support and attention to this, as there are occasionally some parents or children who wish to enter the building before 8:35. a.m.  Only staff, parents with pre-scheduled appointments, and children enrolled in the Early Start Program will be allowed to enter the building before 8:35 a.m.  If you need to drop your child off before this time, the child must be pre-registered for the school-based Early Start Program (973 686-2654 or the emergency number which is 973 417-4409). This program is available between 7:15 and 8:35 a.m. on a regular basis, and an “Emergency Use Only” basis to meet your needs.

In order to ensure the continued safety and security of our schools, the doors will remain locked until 8:35 a.m.  Please do not drop your children off before this time and leave them unattended. When the doors open you may release your child(ren) from your supervision to enter the building.  Students in grades K-2 will report to the gymnasium and students in grades 3-5 will report to the cafeteria where they will be supervised by staff members.  Students are escorted to classrooms at 8:50 a.m. by teachers.  All students are asked to have a book to read between 8:35 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. while waiting for their teachers. 

If it is past 8:55 a.m. do not drop your child off.  Please park in a designated parking place and escort your child(ren) to the front door, ring the bell to enter, and report to the nurse's office with your child for a late pass.  Regarding dismissal, walkers must be picked up by 3:20 p.m.  The doors to the facility will be locked by 4:00 p.m.  No parent of students who are enrolled in our Extended Care Program will, of course, be granted permission to enter the building via the door to the blacktop to pick-up their children.

If you are dropping your child off because of missing the bus, in order to ensure safety for all our students we ask that cars pull up to the circular driveway at the side of our school.  Dropping off at the front entrance poses a safety risk and is reserved for the buses.  All entrances are monitored by staff during entry and dissmissal.

It is imperative that you use one of these options if you need to have your child arrive to school before 8:35 a.m. or remain after school beyond 3:20 p.m.  We must work together to keep our children safe.

VISITING THE SCHOOL:

All visitors to the school, during arrival, dismissal, or any other time, including parents and PTO volunteers must use the front entrance only. Please ring the bell and state your name and purpose.   For security and your child’s protection, all doors are locked during the school day. We need your cooperation with reporting to the main office upon entering the building, signing in, and obtaining a visitor’s badge, regardless of the length of your stay. Upon your exit, please report back to the office, return the badge, and sign out. Once you have completed your volunteer work, we ask your cooperation in that you wait outside the building for the dismissal bell. Please do not wait in the hallway outside of your child’s classroom or in the main hallway. Staff will ask visitors not wearing a badge to report to the main office, or will escort them to the office.

Appointments with staff members should be made prior to meeting with teachers.  Any articles to be delivered to the children, such as cupcakes or lunches must be left at the office and we will bring them down to the classroom.   PLEASE DO NOT GO DIRECTLY TO THE CLASSROOM.  We appreciate your cooperation, and feel it is in the best interest for our children’s safety and allows our staff to prepare appropriately for students’ arrival.  Please use the security BELL for the entrance into the building after student arrival and during the course of the school day.

Again, it is important that we provide a safe, secure environment for our students and appreciate your cooperation.

COMMUNICATIONS:

We often communicate with parents by sending notices home with the children. You are encouraged to establish a routine whereby notices and notes from school are removed from your child’s bags or backpacks and given directly to you. This practice will keep you informed about homework, events, programs and school happenings.

On the first day of school, your child will be bringing home a Terhune Folder which is provided by our P.T.O.  It will be filled with information.  Please read the material enclosed and return all necessary forms after completion.  It is a good idea to establish a daily routine with your child/children in regard to notices, daily homework assignments, etc.   Have your child give you the notices immediately upon returning home from school.  This practice will keep you informed and involved in your child’s schooling.

REGULAR ARRIVAL PROCEDURES:

Children who are “Walkers” and “Car Riders” in grades 1 to 5 should be dropped off on the north side of the building and enter via the side door by the Blacktop/Playground entrance.  If your child is a “Car Rider” please drive your car into the Round-About and have them exit the car on the right side adjacent to the curb.  Please DO NOT STOP the car in order to watch them walk up the path.  This creates a very DANGEROUS SITUATION AND IMPEDES AND BACKS UP THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC.  If you wish to watch them, please park on Geoffrey Way.  This will allow for the greatest number of cars to safely drop-off students.  This area is for quick drop-off.  Please move forward when possible.  (See diagram).

Upon ARRIVAL all students in Grades K to 2 will line-up in the gymnasium.  Students in Grades 3 to 5 will line up in the cafetorium.  Bus students will enter via the main entrance and go to the appropriate area and wait for teacher pick-up.

  • Please note that staff members will be on duty at 8:35 a.m. The A.M. Kindergarten Bus students will enter the Main Entrance and will walk and assemble in the gym by their classroom doors.  Walkers will enter building with the rest of the school children via the double doors adjacent to the Blacktop.
  • The P.M. Kindergarten children will line-up outside by the front foyer upon arrival to school at 12:40 p.m.

(A safety patrol student will be assigned to assist at arrivals of our Kindergarteners.  Although the Safety Patrol assists with our Kindergarten children, this is not adult supervision.  Please do not leave your child unattended outside while on line).

LATE ARRIVAL:  

With the earlier time schedule this year, it is important that you make the necessary adjustment to be able to get to school by 8:35 am. We recognize that from time to time compelling circumstances will require that a child be late to school or dismissed before the end of the school day.

Written notification stating the reason for the tardiness or early dismissal, in advance, is required.  Justifiable reasons may include:

  • Medical or dental appointment which cannot be scheduled outside of school hours.
  • Family emergency.
  • Religious holiday.

We want all children to benefit from the lessons we have prepared and find it most difficult to have pupils make up work when they are tardy or leaving school prior to dismissal.  Please note that your child must be in school for four (4) instructional hours to receive credit for that school day.

EARLY DISMISSAL:

We recognize that emergencies may occur occasionally and a student may need to be dismissed prior to 3:20.  However, we strongly discourage removal of your child prior to dismissal unless there is an emergency situation. 

*Frequent early dismissals interrupts the flow of instruction in the classroom and creates unnecessary activity in the main office.

*We strongly discourage removal of your child between the hours of 3:00 and 3:15 and ask that you wait until 3:20 for dismissal.

REGULAR DISMISSAL PROCEDURES:

Walkers exit via the blacktop area.  1-5 students are dismissed at 3:20 p.m. IF YOU ARE PICKING UP YOUR CHILD(REN) FROM THE BLACKTOP AREA, WE KINDLY ASK THAT YOU WAIT NEAR THE PLAYGROUND AREA, AWAY FROM THE CLASSROOM WINDOWS IN ORDER TO AVOID DISRUPTION OF INSTRUCTION.  Bus students report to supervised bus lines and board buses when they arrive.

  • School buses and Vans will pick up all our Bus Students in front of the school at the West Side Entrance.  Please do not park or stand in this area.  The Round-about will also be closed at dismissal time for the safety of “Walkers” or those who are meeting their parents by their vehicles.
  • Please inform the office on or before 2:30 p.m. if you are removing a child from the bus for a specific day.
  • Please park your car in designated parking spaces and walk to the Blacktop entrance to pick-up your child at dismissal time.  If the parking lot is full park on Geoffrey Way, DO Not pull into the Round-about during dismissal time.  This will be blocked off to help ensure the safety of our students.  Do not send them between cars.
  • Please avoid blocking driveways. Children will not be permitted to walk in the parking lot area alone.  They must be with an adult.
  • All walkers are to cross streets only at the designated crossing areas with our crossing guard.
  • Students in grades 1-5 will exit out onto the Blacktop Area.
  • Kindergarten students will be dismissed via their classroom door.

INCLEMENT DISMISSAL DAYS:

  • Children  should be  dropped-off and  picked-up along  the  curb  on Geoffrey Way.   Do not send them between cars.   They  will  enter school  through  the  double  doors  by   the   blacktop   and   line-up in   the   cafetorium   or   gymnasium  according   to    grade.    Three teachers will  be on duty after  8:35 a.m.                                                                                                  
  • Please do not call children out into the street between cars.  This is an illegal and an unsafe practice.  If you  are  late, your child  should  come  to  the Nurse’s Office to inform us.  We will attempt to locate you.

On inclement dismissal days, if you child normally walks home and you have decided to pick them up by car, please call the main office at (973) 633-3150 by 2:30 p.m., so that we can relay the message to your child’s teacher.  Your child will then meet you in the Main Office where you will sign them out.

For the welfare and safety of all our children, DRIVING ON THE PLAYGROUND/BLACKTOP IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN AT ALL TIMES!

PARKING:

If you must enter the building during the school day, please park in the school parking lot or on Geoffrey Way. Parking is not permitted ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ROAD, directly in FRONT of the school building, at any time.  The NO PARKING zone is clearly marked with a yellow line.  Also, please do not park in spaces reserved for specific staff members.  The police department will be taking an active role issuing tickets to those who park illegally.  On Geoffrey Way please remember to park in an appropriate area to allow for other vehicles to park.

BICYCLE RIDERS:

Children in grades 3, 4, and 5 may ride their bikes to school.  Be sure all bikes are in good working order.  Bikes should be equipped with a basket or rack of some type.  A lock is essential for your bicycle.  We cannot accept responsibility for stolen or damaged bikes.   WALK bicycles on all school walks, and WALK bicycles across all crossing areas and heavily traveled areas.  Don’t forget a helmet!

Do not use the west side entrance unless your child is arriving after 8:55 a.m.  This is for buses.  Driving on the playground is strictly forbidden!

CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY:

The Board of Education supplies textbooks, equipment and supplies.  Pupils are expected to exercise care in handling of all materials.  All textbooks should be covered and carefully treated.  If texts or equipment are lost or damaged, a replacement fee will be assigned.

LABEL ALL ITEMS:

Please put your CHILD’S NAME on their lunch bags, sweaters, coats, jackets, books, etc.  Write their name and class inside the item with a permanent marker or tag.  We will then be able to return any item if it is lost.

GYM ATTIRE:

Children involved in the Physical Education Program must have sneakers on those days they take part in the program.  Girls may wear slacks or shorts to school on those days they are to have Physical Education.  It is imperative that children NOT wear jewelry. 

ART ATTIRE:

It would be helpful if children kept a smock (old shirt) in school at all times.

SNACK PERIOD/STUDENT BIRTHDAYS:

Milk will be available to children in the kindergarten, first and second grades at a cost of 40 cents.  Milk must be ordered on Mondays on a weekly basis.  (Please send the exact amount).  An appropriate snack may be sent from home if you wish.  We encourage "healthy" snacks.

All children want to feel special on their birthday.  To best meet this need we ask that you talk to your child's teacher.  Many teachers already have a special event or celebrations planned.  Snacks can be sent in, but they must be healthy snacks that meet the guidelines as set by the Health Dept.  Parents have been so creative and accomodating with this request!  We have seen some wonderful dishes such as fruit baskets, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, cookies and cupcakes (without the icing,  You may send in whipped cream as a topping) As long as sugar isn't the first listed ingredient, it most likely meets our nutritional needs.

WAYNE TOWNSHIP ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS DISCIPLINE POLICY:

A copy of the elementary school discipline policy is sent annually to parents.  This policy delineates the rights and responsibilities of students, parents and staff.  The policy includes a list of infractions and three levels of consequences for inappropriate behavior.

DRESS CODE REQUIREMENTS:

Proper attire is essential in creating a positive self image and goes a long way in teaching our people to respect themselves as well as others.  We ask for your assistance in ensuring that your children adhere to dress code guidelines to avoid any disciplinary action:

  • All attire should be neat, clean, reflect modesty, and be appropriate for a school environment.
  • Clothes shall not be sheer, brief, low cut, or revealing so as to be embarrassing, distracting, or indecent.  Pants which expose the stomach are not acceptable.
  • Bare midriffs are unacceptable; short skirts that do not cover the stomach area and are not at least 6 inches beyond a student’s fingertips when the student’s hands are placed at the student’s side and the student is in an upright position are not permitted in school.  Also halter tops, tube tops, spaghetti straps, or strapless tops are not permitted.
  • Footwear is required at all times.  Flip-flops or flip-flop type sandals are unsafe and not permitted at any time.
  • Any garment that has graphics that are suggestive, obscene, have a double meaning, refer to gang affiliation, or promote/depict an illegal substance is prohibited.
  • Shorts are acceptable when the weather is hot but they must be neat and ensure modesty.  Shorts that expose undergarments or shorts with distracting/suggestive words or images on them are unacceptable.  Lycra and spandex shorts and tank tops should be reserved for appropriate athletic activities and are unacceptable dress at other times during the school day.
  • Hats and caps shall not be worn inside the school building.
  • No “wheeled” sneakers/shoes are permitted to be worn in school.

Any student that comes to school in inappropriate dress according to the above-cited guidelines will be asked to change his/her clothing.  If the student does not have something appropriate available in school, parents will be contacted to provide them.  Students who continually violate our dress code will be subject to disciplinary action which may include being marked absent from class(es)/school.  These absences will be considered as part of the district attendance policy and may lead to the loss of credit for a course/school year.

Please review these guidelines with your children.  There are many influences, some negative, some positive, which are impacting our young people. It is important for the school and the home to provide some measure of direction whenever we can.  Your assistance with the enforcement of these guidelines is essential and appreciated.

BUS RIDERS:

Good behavior is necessary for safety.  Children should remain in their seats.  Arms and heads should stay inside the bus and not hang out of windows. Excessive misbehavior will result in a report sent home and appropriate consequences.  Continued misbehavior may result in revoking a child’s bus privilege. 

If your child will not be taking the bus on a particular day of the week (example: C.C.D., Hebrew School, Brownies, Cub Scouts, etc.), please provide the school with a single blanket note for the school year.  The note should explain the day of the week and the reason.  The children are then dismissed with the walkers through the appropriate exit.  Please do not wait in the foyer to take children off class lines!  We take bus attendance and this would disrupt the process.

TRANSPORTATION:

TRANSPORTATION ELIGIBILITY:
Only those students entitled to transportation may ride the bus to and/or from school. Students must take their assigned bus unless other arrangements have been made. Students must board and get off of the bus at their assigned stop.  They cannot go on any other bus, nor can they have a friend, who is not a bus student, go home with them on the bus.

TRANSPORTATION CHANGES:

Students eligible for bus transportation are expected to use the bus unless there is written notice from a parent indicating a change. The note should be sent to your child’s teacher and include the particular date or dates and the specific change of transportation. Please do not call the office to make a last minute request. This option is for emergencies only.  You must plan head.

Emergencies do arise and sometimes notification in advance is not possible. PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE and we will get the message to your child. Again, this is for emergencies only.

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL:

Absence from school should be held to an absolute minimum in the best educational interest of the student. The only reasons permitted for an excused absence are religious holidays, illness of the students, or a death in the immediate family.

a.  K– 5 parents should call 973 633-3150 extension #70 by 8:55 a.m. to report absences. Please leave the date, your child's name, grade, teacher, reason for absence, and name of the bus your child rides.  If your child is absent and you do not call, you will receive a call from the school.  An absence from school requires a note to be sent with your child when he/she returns.  The note should explain the reason for the absence. 

b.  There may be times when parents choose to keep children out of school for other reasons, such as for traveling and family vacation trips. We, of course, discourage this practice, asking that you plan your vacation during scheduled school vacations.  Excessive absenteeism may result in retention.

c.   In all cases of pupil absences, students are held responsible for assignments. Teachers are expected to provide pupils with missed assignments and a suitable amount of time is provided for that purpose upon the student’s return.

PLEASE NOTE WE WILL SUPPLY HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK AFTER A STUDENT HAS BEEN OUT FOR TWO OR MORE DAYS.  THE PARENT MAY REQUEST THE HOMEWORK WHEN THE CHILD IS CALLED OUT ABSENT OR TO THE MAIN OFFICE BEFORE 11:00 AM. PARENTS MAY PICK UP THE BOOKS AND WORK IN THE MAIN OFFICE AFTER 2:00PM.  PLEASE NOTE THAT IF THE REQUEST IS TO HAVE ANOTHER CHILD PICK UP THE WORK, AND THE ASSIGNMENT INCLUDES TEXTBOOKS, THE PARENT MAKING THE REQUEST WILL BE ASKED TO PAY A REPLACEMENT FEE IF THE BOOKS ARE LOST OR MISPLACED. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT TIME WILL BE ALLOTTED TO COMPLETE MISSED WORK UPON RETURN TO SCHOOL.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION IN THIS MATTER.

d.  Please do not ask for advance assignments in order to have children complete their work prior to or while on vacation. Teachers can not project their plans too far in advance, since accomplishments of many given tasks depends on a class’s need for teaching over again, review, or other unforeseen interruptions during the school day. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Children may not be excused from participation in any school activity (including Physical Education and recess), with the exception of pupils having medical excuses signed by a doctor.

TARDINESS:

WITH OUR NEW TIME SCHEDULE, IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE STUDENT ARRIVE AT 8:35 AM EACH DAY.

Bus students are considered excused in the event of a bus delay.  Students must stop by the Nurse's Office before going to their classrooms if they are late.

HOMEWORK POLICY:

    Kindergarten:

  • A minimum of three activities per week.
  • A maximum of five activities per week.

    Grades One and Two:

  • A minimum of 20 minutes daily not to exceed 80 minutes per week.
  • A maximum of 30 minutes daily not to exceed 120 minutes per week.

    Grade Three:

  • A minimum of 30 minutes daily not to exceed 120 minutes per week.
  • A maximum of 45 minutes daily not to exceed 180 minutes per week.

    Grade Four:

  • A minimum of 45 minutes daily not to exceed 180 minutes per week.
  • A maximum of 60 minutes daily not to exceed 240 minutes per week.

    Grade Five:  

  • A minimum of 60 minutes daily not to exceed 240 minutes per week.
  • A maximum of 90 minutes daily not to exceed 360 minutes per week.

HOMEWORK – OTHER FACTS:

  • Forgetting Homework - If your child has forgotten an assignment at home and you wish to bring it to school, we ask that you NOT bring it to the classroom but to the Main Office. Mrs. Doster will be sure that your child receives the assignment.  All visitors must report to the office.
  • During Child's Absence - To request homework a child must be absent from school two or more days.  If your child fits into this category, you can leave the homework request when calling the absentee line 973-633-3150, or call the office by 11:00 a.m.  Please do not ask for work when taking your child out of school for a vacation.  We cannot accomodate this nor do we encourage a lenthy absence for this reason. Parents must pick up the books and assignments in the main office after 2:00 pm.    Please keep in mind that your child may not perform optimally with homework if he/she is not feeling well. There will be sufficient time for your child to make up missed assignments and homework upon his/her return.  (PLEASE SEE ABOVE)
  • Please do not ask for work when taking your child out of school for a vacation.  We cannot accomodate this nor do we encourage a lenthy absence for this reason.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD WITH HOMEWORK:

You can best help your child by setting up a routine for homework.  Homework should always be done as part of your afterschool routine, whether it be right after school or after dinner.  Set up a place where your child can do homework every night.  Be sure your child understands the task that they have been asked to do (read the directions with them) and then let them do the work.  Once they are done, review it.  At this time you can make suggestions (such as, "Are you sure this answer is right?" or "Do you want to look at this one again?") but do not correct the work.  Homework helps the teachers understand what is truly being comprehended by your child.

Emergency cards will be sent home the first day of school in the opening day folder.  Please include ALL CELL PHONE NUMBERS AND WORK NUMBERS.  Please return these cards to the Health Office as soon as possible.

LUNCH PROGRAM AND SCHEDULE:

Lunch may be purchased on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis for $2.00 per day, or children may bring lunch from home.  If you wish to participate in our student lunch debit account system, all you need to do is bring cash or a check payable to the Wayne Board of Education to the food service manager. The payment can be dropped off sometime during the hours of operation, preferably morning hours prior to lunch.  If you have any questions please call the Wayne District Food Service Director, at 973-633-3049.

A menu will be sent home at the beginning of each school month.  Except in emergencies, pupils may not charge lunches.  Charges must be paid on the next school day.

Your child will receive a Free/Reduced Lunch Application.  It is important that you fill it out and return it regardless of whether or not you wish to receive free or reduced lunch.  Lunch will not be served on Minimal Days.  Please send in a snack for your child.  There will be a snack break in all classes on these days.

Please note:  In order to provide a safe lunch/recess environment with proper supervision, Grade 3 will have a rotating time schedule so that two classes will eat during the first lunch period and one Grade 3 class during the last period.  The classes will rotate a third of the year so each grade 3 class has a similar schedule.

If lunch is forgotten at home and you wish to bring it to school, please label with your child’s name, grade, and teacher.  Ring the doorbell, wait to be admitted, and then report directly to the office.  Please do not go to the classroom, Mrs. Doster will make sure that your child gets his/her lunch.

Please help your child understand why we must maintain high standards of pupil behavior in the cafetorium and on the playground.  Children who pose continued behavior problems in thecafeteria will be excluded from using the school lunch facilities.  The district discipline policy will be enforced.

LOST & FOUND:

The Lost and Found is located in the cafetorium. Each year we have many articles of clothing and personal possessions that are simply not claimed by our students. Please LABEL everything that your child owns, including every article of clothing, especially outerwear, so that we can return these items to your child when they are not retrieved.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

As mandated by the state, there is no smoking in our school building or on school grounds, at any time.

Please read and review the procedures outlined in this letter.  We want all of our children to have a successful school experience.  This can only be achieved with cooperation and support from the home.  We know that we can count on you to help your child honor his or her school responsibilities and respect the “rules of the road” that have been put in place for his or her benefit.  In closing, I thought you would enjoy a few simple ideas that might help you and your family gear up for a great school year (they were taken from “Parents Make a Difference!” magazine):

  • Make a plan for after-school activities.
  • Schedule adequate time for homework, play, clubs, sports, and practice.
  • Scale back TV time.
  • Establish bedtimes for school nights.
  • Collect important phone numbers.  Update doctor, work, and other listings for the school office, after-school programs, and one or two neighbors.
  • Create a car pool, if possible.  Compare schedules with friends, and determine which parents can drive kids when you cannot drive.
  • Have a backup plan.  Find another parent who will exchange school pickup favors in case you get ill or delayed.
  • Spruce up a study space for your child(ren).  Include pens, pencils, dictionary, and other needed supplies.
  • Get children in the habit of getting ready the night before school.  Set out clothes, pack lunch, and put the backpack by the front door.
  • Get children to school on time and only keep them home when they are sick.

AUTOMATICITY GOALS FOR FACT POWER BY THE END OF EACH GRADE

In order to clarify levels of proficiency with facts, the Wayne Elementary Mathematics Committee has set forth math fact goals for students to attain by the end of each grade level.

As with all goals concerning memory, we recognize that some children will have difficulty attaining automaticity.  However, we hope that teachers and parents will use many methods to help the children arrive at the stated goal.

  • We assume that a fact is a fact.  100% accuracy is our goal.
  • In setting the time goals, automaticity is defined in terms of math facts per minute.  Before attaining automaticity, children should be able to arrive at a correct answer “relatively quickly”, which we define as a rate of 10 math facts per minute.  This time frame allows for children to use math strategies to compute the math fact.

5TH Grade –

              Continue Automaticity as for fourth grade

4th Grade –

              Automaticity with 2-9 multiplication tables

                            35 facts per minute

              Division tables 2-9

                            20 facts per minute

              Automaticity with addition and subtraction facts to 20

                            35 facts per minute

3rd Grade –

              Multiplication tables 2-9

                            20 facts per minute

              Division tables 2-9

                            10 facts per minute

              Automaticity with addition and subtraction facts to 20

                            20 facts per minute

2nd Grade –

              Automaticity with addition and subtraction facts to 10

                            35 facts per minute

              Addition and subtraction facts 10 – 20

                            10 facts per minute

1st Grade –

              Addition and subtraction facts to ten

                            10 facts per minute

Kindergarten –
